Agricultural sector is the second largest GHG emitting sector, contributing about one-fourth of global emissions. Modern chemical-intensive and mechanised agricultural methods (that we have adopted over the last 6-7 decades) emit the most devastating GHGs – like Methane and N2O. However, we have consciously imposed them on ourselves to ensure food security for our burgeoning population. Agri-Net-Zero – The Ultimate Solution
As per the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), an ideal Net Zero program should:
- Send less GHG to the atmosphere from its existing processes (i.e. Climate Change Mitigation); and
- Modify its own processes so as to reduce GHG emissions over time (i.e. Climate Change Adaptation)
Moreover, the IPCC guidelines further specify the level of priority behind attending these sources of emissions as:
- The entry point into longer-term emissions reducing activities.
- Applied only to “Impossible-to-Abate” emissions in sectors without equivalent and available zero-carbon operations.
